Spring Term Highlights from Year 3

It has been another fantastic term in Year 3! The children have continued to impress us with their enthusiasm, resilience, and determination to do their very best. They have embraced new challenges across the curriculum with confidence and curiosity, and we are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved this term.

Writing

This term, Year 3 have continued to develop their writing skills and confidence across a range of genres. We have focused on key grammatical features, including:

• Using fronted adverbials to vary sentence openings and provide additional detail

• Punctuating direct speech accurately using speech marks

• Using apostrophes for possession correctly

• Editing and improving writing to ensure greater accuracy and clarity

The children have worked hard to apply these skills independently and have shown growing confidence in crafting well-structured and engaging pieces of writing. It has been wonderful to see them becoming more thoughtful and reflective writers as they revise and improve their work.

Reading

Our class reading text this term has been The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The children have thoroughly enjoyed entering the magical land of Narnia and following the exciting adventures of the Pevensie children. They have taken part in thoughtful discussions about the characters, themes, and events in the story and have developed their inference and comprehension skills through a range of reading activities.

It has been wonderful to see so many children engaged and excited about reading, sharing their ideas enthusiastically and making thoughtful connections throughout the text.

Maths

In Maths this term, we have focused on money and measurement.

The children have developed their understanding of pounds and pence, learning how to add and subtract amounts of money and calculate change. They have enjoyed solving real-life money problems and becoming more confident when working with different combinations of coins and notes.

In measurement, we explored mass and capacity, learning to measure and compare quantities using grams (g), kilograms (kg), millilitres (ml), and litres (l). The children used a range of practical equipment to estimate, measure, and compare different amounts and developed their understanding of when each unit of measurement is appropriate.

Their growing confidence and accuracy have been fantastic to see.

History

In History this term, Year 3 have been learning about Ancient Egypt. The children explored what life was like in Ancient Egyptian times, learning about pharaohs, pyramids, hieroglyphics, and the importance of the River Nile. They were fascinated by the beliefs and customs of the Ancient Egyptians and enjoyed discovering how this remarkable civilisation lived thousands of years ago.

One of the highlights of the topic was learning about mummification. The children explored the process ancient Egyptians used to preserve bodies and even took part in a practical mummification activity themselves. This hands-on experience brought their learning to life and helped them develop a deeper understanding of ancient traditions and beliefs.

Science

This term, Year 3 have learned about nutrition, healthy eating, and plant life cycles.

The children investigated the different food groups and explored how a balanced diet helps us to stay healthy. They examined food packaging carefully, learning how to read and interpret nutritional information on food labels. They found it particularly interesting to compare the levels of sugar, fat, and other nutrients in everyday foods.

We also studied how plants grow and survive, learning about the important role that leaves play in making food. The children were introduced to the process of the carbon cycle and explored how plants help to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. They asked thoughtful scientific questions and enjoyed making connections between plants, animals, and our environment.

Educational Visit

A highlight of the term was our trip to the woods, where the children enjoyed exploring the natural environment through a range of hands-on outdoor learning activities. They worked collaboratively, developed their observation skills, and learned more about the plants, animals, and habitats found in local woodland areas. The children showed excellent curiosity, enthusiasm, and respect for nature throughout the visit, making it a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Physical Education (PE)

This term, Year 3 have shown excellent teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship in PE lessons. A particular highlight was taking part in a cricket tournament alongside Year 4. The children represented the school brilliantly, demonstrating fantastic effort, encouragement, and enthusiasm throughout the event. We were incredibly proud of the positive attitude and resilience they showed, whether batting, bowling, or fielding.

The children have also enjoyed their swimming lessons, where they have worked hard to develop their confidence and skills in the water. They have practised a range of swimming techniques and water safety skills, showing great perseverance and determination as they challenged themselves to improve. It has been wonderful to see their growing confidence and achievements throughout the term.
