Spring Term Highlights from Year 5
Back
Once again, Year 5 have had a busy and productive term! This term in English, the children have immersed themselves in two exciting texts. We began with The Fastest Boy in the World, which not only captivated the class with its uplifting storyline but also helped us learn about Ethiopia and the importance of perseverance when pursuing a dream. We then moved on to Wolf Brother, a firm favourite among the pupils due to its drama, suspense, and vivid, immersive language that brought the story to life. In writing, the children explored two new genres: a narrative describing a journey across Ethiopia and a diary entry written from the perspective of someone lost in the woods. Both pieces gave the children rich opportunities to apply their descriptive skills and develop their writer’s voice.
In maths, we worked hard on multiplication and division. The children learned how to use long multiplication to successfully multiply 4‑digit numbers by 2‑digit numbers, showing increasing confidence with each step of the process. We also began working with short division, using the bus stop method to divide 4‑digit numbers by 1‑digit numbers. Building on this, we have now started applying our understanding of these operations to fractions, and we will continue to develop these skills into the summer term.
Our foundation subjects have been full of creativity, discovery, and hands‑on learning. In history, the children explored the fascinating world of the Ancient Greeks, uncovering myths, daily life, and the birth of democracy. In geography, we studied coasts, learning how they are formed and how they change over time. Art lessons introduced us to the work of Antoni Gaudí, with a focus on his colourful trencadís mosaic style. In Design and Technology, the children channelled their imagination and engineering skills into creating their own pinball machines, which were a huge success. PE has been energetic and competitive, with bench ball quickly becoming a class favourite as the children worked on teamwork, strategy, and coordination.
I am incredibly proud of the hard work, enthusiasm, and resilience the class has shown this term, and I am very much looking forward to seeing them continue to shine as we move into the summer term.
