Spring Term Highlights from Year 2
Back
It has been a fantastic term in Year 2! The children have shown such enthusiasm, curiosity, and resilience in every subject. Their growing independence and confidence have been a joy to watch, and I am incredibly proud of the progress they are making day by day.
Writing
This term, our class reader was the wonderfully imaginative Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book? The children loved exploring its unusual setting and mischievous characters. Using the story as inspiration, we developed our descriptive writing skills by learning how to use adjectives to describe nouns, how to write lists using commas, and how to write accurately in the past tense.
It has been wonderful to see the children applying these grammar skills in their independent writing our Year 2 authors have produced some truly fantastic sentences!
Maths
In Maths, we have been investigating mass, volume, and capacity. The children enjoyed comparing the weight of different classroom objects, estimating amounts, and carrying out hands-on measuring activities. Using scales, jugs, and containers, they explored how to read measurements carefully and solve practical problems. Their confidence with mathematical vocabulary has grown enormously well done, Year 2!
Science
Our Science topic this term has been plants and their life cycles. We learned how plants grow from seeds, what they need to stay healthy, and the names of each part of a plant. A highlight of the term was growing our very own cress, which gave the children the chance to observe roots, shoots, and leaves up close. Their excitement at watching their plants sprout was wonderful to see!
Design & Technology (DT)
DT has been full of creativity and craftsmanship this term. The children designed and made their own coin purses, learning how to sew using a needle and felt. We explored where yarn comes from, how it is spun, and how fabric is created. The children showed remarkable perseverance as they learned different stitching techniques, and their finished purses are something to be truly proud of.
