Spring Term Highlights from Year 1
Back
It has been a wonderful term in Year 1! I am so impressed by the children’s dedication to their foundational skills. We have seen excellent progress in sitting postures and daily letter formation— essential building blocks for the years ahead.
Writing
Our young writers have been working hard on dictation and grammar. We’ve used our Phonics skills to write independent sentences focusing on identifying personal pronouns and writing them as subjects and objects, inspired by our class reader, The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Peter Rabbit.
Maths
In Maths, we have been busy mastering our Foundational Knowledge, practicing more than, less than and counting in 10s and 1s and addition and subtraction up to 20.
Science
We’ve been exploring the parts of a plant this term. Taking advantage of the sunshine, we headed outdoors to find wild plants growing on our school grounds. After spotting daisies, daffodils, and buttercups, we discussed how wildflowers provide vital habitats and food for bees, butterflies, birds, and even small mammals.
Design & Technology (DT)
After studying famous bridges from around the world, the children became engineers! Using recycled materials, they constructed their own bridges designed to hold the weight of a toy. This project required a lot of resilience and "evaluation" as they refined their designs. It was fantastic to see their unique final pieces.
A Message from Mrs Stark
I am incredibly proud of the progress the children have made, not just academically, but in their wonderful attitudes toward learning. Your support with home reading and Phonics has clearly paid off, as our recent assessments are looking very strong. Let’s keep this momentum going as we prepare for the transition to Year 2!
Thank you for your continued engagement and support. I value our school-home partnership greatly. Have a wonderful, restful Easter break—I look forward to seeing everyone for the Summer Term.
