Spring Term Highlights from Reception
Back
Spring term has been a short but busy term in Reception. We started 2026 by learning about all the people around us that help us. This included doctors, dentists, firefighters, the police service and many more key workers. Reception were really engaged with different role play areas linked to these professions and learning more about the people that they see around them and what their jobs entailed. We labelled body parts, created our own fire-based art and cleaned laminated teeth just to name a few activities.
In Spring 1 we were also given many chances to discuss winter with all the different weathers that we faced. We even had snow which was very exciting for the children that had not experienced that amount of snow previously. We also celebrated Valentines Day together and had a love themed stay and play session with parents in school to end the term.
In Spring 2 we then looked at all the transport that we see around us and locations a bit further away from home while exploring our topic “We’re on the move”. We discovered what a journey was a looked at the different ways that people take journeys across the world. Reception particularly enjoyed making junk modelling vehicles, painting with vehicles and exploring the text “Naughty Bus”.
In this term we had many celebrations to cover including Holi, Mother’s Day and Eid. We were so excited to share these celebrations both in school and at home. We then finished the term looking at Easter through Easter texts, egg pattern matching and crafts before inviting parents to share our play in our end of term stay and play session.
In Phonics, we have now learnt all our Phase 2 and Phase 3 sounds, so we are working on longer words and we are starting to write short captions and sentences. We have been working hard to orally compose and then put our own ideas down on paper especially this term. We have also started our new Reading and Writing carousels this term, which the children have engaged so well with. This has led to increased oracy practice and fine motor activities which the children always enjoy. We have also continued with regular handwriting practice and paired reading which are both showing great improvements with each week that passes.
In Maths we have moved onto numbers up to 10. Reception can now say which number is 1 more, 1 less and are even starting to know number bonds to 10. Doubling has been a topic that they have excelled in, and they have even learnt their own doubles song to help them remember their doubles to 10. We have also compared size, length and weight this term and recognised that we have variable sized vehicles within the class. When looking at shapes this term, we have looked at different properties of 2D shapes, but we are excited to move onto 3D shapes next term.
Overall, Spring term has brought so many new skills, opportunities to build upon learning and continuing to learn more about the wider world. Reception cannot wait to continue their learning journey into the Summer term.
