Autumn Term Highlights from Year 5
Back
As we wrap up the Autumn term, it’s wonderful to reflect on the fantastic progress Year 5 have made since September. Year 5 has shown determination, creativity, and a real enthusiasm for learning across all subjects!
This term, we have had a strong focus on the foundations within our maths lessons. We started with place value and moved through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Recently, we’ve begun exploring fractions, which has sparked lots of curiosity and problem-solving! Every day, we practise our maths fluency to strengthen our core skills. We have also extended our learning with challenging reasoning questions in our maths journals. It’s been brilliant to see the confidence and resilience growing in every lesson.
In English, we’ve enjoyed diving into two fantastic texts: Varjak Paw and the thought-provoking picture book FArTHER. Each lesson has focused on developing a different comprehension skill, helping Year 5 become more thoughtful and analytical readers. Alongside this, we’ve been reading for pleasure every day and sharing the wonderful class reader, War Horse, which has sparked some great discussions. In writing, we began the year revising key skills to ensure 100% accuracy in our work. From there, we progressed to genre writing, producing a descriptive narrative piece and a detailed non-chronological report. The creativity and effort in these pieces have been outstanding!
Our learning beyond English and Maths has been just as exciting. In Geography, we explored the fascinating topic of rivers, while in History, we stepped back in time to learn about the Tudors through a mix of knowledge-based and practical activities. In Art, we created our own ‘joiners’ pieces inspired by David Hockney, combining photography and drawing skills to produce striking work. In DT, we focused on structure and engineering, designing and building our own marble runs which was a brilliant way to combine creativity with problem-solving.
Year 5 have worked incredibly hard this term, and I am incredibly proud of the progress they have made. I am excited for the learning adventures that await us in the Spring term!
