Autumn Term Highlights from Year 4
Back
This term I have been so impressed with how the children have come back ready to learn, be inquisitive and really have fun with their learning.
We have been covering a range of topics and from this some excellent pieces of work have been produced with beautiful presentations.
In English, we have read a range of books including Leon and the Place Between, Iliad and the Odyssey Comic Strip book and Race to the Frozen North. This last book the children were fascinated to learn that this was based on true events and the conditions the explorers faced within this landscape. Lots of great questions were generated and researching about the main character the children thoroughly loved. Writing we have developed our skills in writing linked to these books and the progress the children have made with their vocabulary choices and understanding of sentence structure has really impressed me.
In Maths, we have been focusing on our Times Tables which are key I Year 4 as well as place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children’s number knowledge has really improved and the mental strategies they can use are essential for moving maths skills forward.
With the other wider curriculum subjects, we have studied The Romans and learnt about how important this historical period was and what legacy they left. Geography has been all about Mountains, reading maps and creating our own mountains out of paper to show the contour lines. Science has been fun this term and the curiosity and awe the children have shown has really pleased me. We have melted ice cubes, chocolate and learnt to classify animals and plants, which led to a hunt around the school grounds for mini beasts and other flora and fauna. The children loved this!
Overall, this term I have been so impressed with Year 4’s keenness to learn and ask questions as well as beginning to develop independence and making their own choices. They are always 100% and enjoy their learning. Looking forward to next term and what it brings.
