This term, Year 3 have worked incredibly hard in all of their subjects. It has been wonderful to see them flourish and take to Year 3 with such determination and resilience. I have been extremely proud to be their teacher alongside Mrs Bahar and Miss Mohamed over the Autumn term.

In English, we have read 'Malala's Magic Pencil' and 'Bubble and Squeak' - we have focused on developing empathy and how we can begin to understand other people's thoughts and feelings. Malala's Magic Pencil has linked well with our focus on becoming a Rights Respecting School - in particular around universal access to education. We certainly had some interesting debates around this. In Year 3, the children have been introduced to Accelerated Reader (AR) and have been completing quizzes based on the books they have been reading - so many of them have been scoring 100% in their tests!

In maths, we have focused on number and place value and understanding how numbers work with each other. We have had a strong emphasis on ensuring we are secure with our number bonds within 20 as well as being secure with our times tables (2,5,10,3) and learning the 4 times tables. The children have risen to the challenge and are now more confident (and speedier) with recalling these basic number facts. They've realised how important these are for helping them with other questions.

Overall though, it has been hard to choose the highlights from the Autumn term as there have been so many wonderful learning opportunities; but I think the most exciting part of Year 3 so far has to be the 'intergenerational reading project' with Bupa and the National Literacy Trust - this year the theme was sustainability and climate change - which is something we take seriously at Ranikhet. As part of this project, Year 3 visited Parkside Care Home and had a wonderful time listening to stories and poems. They also got to choose a book to keep and spent some time talking and reading with the residents. We were then extremely fortunate to host some of the residents at Ranikhet. They joined us on Christmas Jumper Day for more stories and we all made bird boxes. I'm delighted to share a video that has been produced by Bupa, which showcases the event. You can watch it here.
