Autumn Term Highlights from Year 2

Message from Miss Hutchinson
Year 2 have had a fantastic start to the year, filled with hard work and exciting learning!
One of the highlights has been their incredible effort in preparing for the KS1 Christmas play. The children have worked tirelessly to memorise their lines, perfect their dances, and learn all the songs. Their dedication and enthusiasm have truly shone through, and they should feel extremely proud of everything they’ve achieved this term!
Science
In Science this term, we’ve been exploring the fascinating world of animals and their habitats!
We discovered what animals need to survive and how their amazing adaptations help them thrive in different environments. Our learning took us into the world of microhabitats, where we investigated the tiny creatures that call these spaces home.
Heading outdoors, we became nature detectives—lifting rocks and leaves to uncover ants, woodlice, worms, and even spiders! It was a fantastic opportunity to see first-hand how these mini beasts live and interact with their surroundings.
Maths
In Maths, Year 2 have been diving into addition and subtraction!
We’ve been using our number bonds to 20 to tackle problems and enjoyed practical lessons with base ten equipment to help us add two-digit numbers. The children have shown fantastic resilience—persevering with tricky challenges and demonstrating a real ‘have-a-go’ attitude.
Geography
In Geography, Year 2 have been discovering the wonders of Great Britain!
We’ve been practicing our atlas skills by locating countries and creating vibrant tourism posters for England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Along the way, we explored the rich cultural traditions of each nation—such as Morris dancing in England, Irish dancing, the Scottish sword dance (Ghillie Callum), and Welsh folk dancing.
It’s been an exciting journey learning about the unique heritage that makes each country special!
