Our topic of Minibeasts kicked off with a number of bugs taking up residence in our classroom! From spiders to snails, ants to worms, and caterpillar and wood lice – our classroom has been transformed into a minibeast zoo!

We have been so lucky to watch the metamorphosis of caterpillars into butterflies. The children have enjoyed observing and caring for the menagerie of bugs. They have explored for bugs in our Nursery garden and have found so many which they love to share with each other and their teachers.

We have enjoyed reading stories such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Busy Spider, The Bad-Tempered Ladybird and Superworm. The children have enjoyed acting out the stories and creating story maps to help them retell the stories. We have also enjoyed looking at non-fiction books like Down on the Farm: Bees, Snails Up Close, Beetle, Watch It Grow: Ladybird and Minibeasts in the Soil to learn more facts about minibeasts.

In Maths, we have been exploring the value of numbers and 2D shapes. We created beehives using hexagonal shapes and used our thumbs to make bees with yellow and black paint. For The Very Hungry Caterpillar we have created a growing pattern of the fruits the caterpillar consumed in one week.
