This half term has been very busy with activities and new learning, as well as our second residential to Ufton Court, which involved more outside fun and team building tasks linked to challenging the children to approach things they might not have done so before. Once again, the children had an amazing time and we have one last residential to go!

In Mathematics, we have covered a range of different areas and learnt new strategies and methods for solving multiplication and division problems, including those with remainders. In fractions we used counters, drawings, and bar models to help reinforce our understanding for this sometimes-tricky topic.

In English, the class enjoyed our class book – Secrets of a Sun King and we will continue to read this to find out what happens and if the curse is broken! The children really had fun creating their adverts using all the features learnt to make me want to buy their trainers. Also writing a persuasive letter about non-school uniform led to a lovely debate with many reasons why we should/shouldn’t have a uniform.

In Geography, we travelled to Japan and looked at the similarities it has with the UK, plus the stunning physical and human features it possesses. We learnt some Japanese and how their religion plays an important part in their lives as well as their cultural heritage. From previous topics the children were able to explain why Japan has so many earthquakes as well as the fact that the population is so high and what effect this has on the capital Tokyo.

In Science, we explored living things and their habitats and discussed how certain creatures and plants were more suitable to live in that environment compared to others. We also discussed the local habitats that are around us and what types of plant and creatures could be found in these.

With Design and Technology, the children were given the task of creating a marble run which they loved designing, making, and presenting to the rest of the class. They were very impressive, and all worked with some small adjustments needing to be made.

Overall, I have been extremely proud of how the new Year 5s have taken to their learning and producing great pieces of work.
