The Year 2 children have all been working incredibly hard this half term. It has been busy and full of exciting opportunities.

Computing

In computing, we have been exploring Microsoft Teams as well as other computer programs. All of the children have been developing their keyboard and mouse skills to support them when logging onto the computers. We have had some fun opportunities to create firework pictures and Christmas pictures using the Paint program. The children explored editing pictures of minibeasts by changing the colour, contrast and brightness, as well as adding different filters. We then took our learning a step further and used data about minibeasts to create spreadsheets and then turning these into bar graphs.

Maths

Jeffers class have been busy in maths this half term and have covered lots of different topics. We have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes. We can name and describe their properties including faces, edges and vertices. We have also been focusing on telling the time including o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to the hour using an analogue clock face. This can be quite tricky so please keep practicing at home.

English

Did you hear that we had aliens invade the KS1 Library area? We read The Ranikhet Express newspaper and discovered that a UFO was sighted over our school. When we came in, the library was a mess; chairs upside down, handprints on the wall, Lego everywhere! We wrote our own newspaper report to explain what they had done. We learnt about having a catchy headline and about the 5 w’s (who, what, where, when, why).

History

We have been learning all about The Great Fire of London in history. We learnt when it started, where it started and why it spread so quickly and what changes needed to be made when they rebuilt London. We also found out about a man call Samuel Pepys and his diary and how it is a source of information because he was an eyewitness. We used this in our English writing too and have written our own diary entries about The Great Fire of London. We needed to write in the first person and in the past tense.

Production

All of KS1 have been taking lots of time to learn and practice for our Christmas Show. We have been learning new songs and words and there are some budding actors among us so keep your eyes peeled in the future. This was also an opportunity to learn about the Christian faith and the Christmas story as well as how Christmas is celebrated in other countries around the world.

Message from Miss Höke

I would like to say a huge well done to all the children on their Christmas performance. They made all the staff and their parents very proud. Well done, you are all superstars! The children have all worked so hard in their phonics sessions and have made amazing progress so please congratulate them at home.

I hope you all have a lovely Christmas break and enjoy spending time with family and friends. Please ensure the children take some time to relax and enjoy their time away from learning. Stay safe and we will see you in 2022!
