Trip to Parliament House
Back
Our two Pupil Parliamentarians from Year 6 have been fortunate enough to visit Parliament House and be part of a Topical Debate with some other children from schools within The Reach 2 Trust. It was an amazing day out and we hope to be able to offer more students exciting opportunities like this throughout their school lives.
Pupil Parliament Debate – 17th June
Debate Topic: Do We Have a Responsibility to Protect Other People’s Rights and Freedoms?
Here’s how you can explain and structure the topic so a ten-year-old can understand:
For (Yes, We Should Protect Others’ Rights and Freedoms):
- Helping Others Is Important: If someone is in trouble or being treated unfairly, we should help them, just like we’d want someone to help us.
- Everyone Deserves Respect: Every person has the right to feel safe and be treated fairly, no matter who they are.
- We Build a Better World Together: When we stand up for each other, we create a kinder, stronger community where everyone feels happy and included.
Against (No, We Don’t Always Have to Protect Others):
- It’s Not Always Our Job: Sometimes, it’s the government’s or other adults’ responsibility to protect people, not ours.
- We Can’t Solve Every Problem: There are so many people in the world, and it’s impossible to help everyone all the time.
- Focusing on Our Own Lives: We should make sure we are doing well first before trying to help others, so we don’t overwhelm ourselves.
This topic helps children think about fairness, kindness, and their role in the community while considering different perspectives.
