Wow! Where do we start? It’s been an incredibly busy term in Year 3. With Mr Church joining us, we’ve worked hard to ensure that everyone is ready for learning and brings their best version to school. There is lots to celebrate this term. These are just some of the highlights!

Reading

We have had great fun reading ‘The Witches’ and ‘The Battle of Bubble and Squeak’. There were mixed opinions over the latter; not everyone started off enjoying the book, but the twist at the end had us all surprised. We were shocked with how the story developed. We all thought Mrs Sparrow didn’t want the gerbils at the start, but it’s amazing how convincing family can be.

Writing

In Writing, we have been working hard on our sentence level work. Our main focus has been on understanding what makes a sentence and understanding the different components (such as adverbs, subjects and prepositional phrases). As a result, Year 3 have created some amazing pieces of writing based on books they’ve previously read (such as The Iron Man).

Maths

The children have worked incredibly hard with their maths this term. We have focused on a range of topics from fractions to mass and capacity. It has been great to see the children try their best with some of the more challenging questions and think carefully about their work; especially when looking for patterns to help with our understanding of fractions, using the numerator and denominator.

Science

In science this term, Year 3 have learned about the human body; thinking about how our bodies move and protect us using skeletons and muscles – even making our own moving hands as a model. We’ve also learned about how plants survive. The highlight was when our families came in for a science lesson and we set up an experiment to investigate water transportation in celery.

Geography

Year 3 have loved their topic this term, learning all about volcanoes and the impact they have on humans. We learned about active, dormant and extinct volcanoes – and how these are formed. Year 3 were fascinated to learn about what happened in Pompeii over 2000 years ago. As a year group, it was decided that we didn’t want to live near the base of a volcano (just in case it was as active as Mount Vesuvius!).
