This term has been fulfilled with lots of busy learning, the children have become poets, scientists, historians and performers along side many other learning opportunities.

English

In English we have learnt about poetry and how to write our own poems. The children have explored rhyming words and how to use them within their writing. The children have been exploring letter writing and the different aspects that you need to write a letter. The children used some fantastic emotive language to explain how they were feeling in their letter.

Maths

In Maths the children have been exploring addition and subtraction. The children can explain what happens when you add numbers together as well as subtract. We have learnt how to use part whole models and how these can help us to solve both addition and subtraction problems, the children have also practised this using tens frames and bar models.

History

We have been historians and learnt all about the history of Ranikhet and the surrounding area. We have really enjoyed looking at the comparisons of what Tilehurst looked like in the past and how it looks now. The children were shocked with the difference to Dee Road!

Science

Our topic this term is looking at the human body. We have learnt and explored the different parts of the body and we’ve looked at our five senses and how we use them to navigate the world. The children put on blind folds and explored their environment with the support of their friends. We have also thought about our hearing and how we use our ears to keep us safe in the environment. We have explored taste and how that we all have taste buds. We discovered that some fruit was sour, and some was sweet. This has linked to our smoothing making where we have designed our own recipes.

Finally, after all the learning! Key Stage 1 put on the best Christmas performance that I have seen. All the children participated. The children did a fantastic job of remembering their lines and when they needed to speak. They also remembered all the actions and sang all the songs beautifully. Miss Hoke and I could not have been prouder.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents in Year 1 with their continued support in their children’s education. I hope that you all have a restful and healthy holiday and I cannot wait to see what learning the New Year will bring.
